Etienne Pierart - A grandiose and invicible sight.

The planet acts as his studio.  His photographs convey the beauty and complexity of the contradictions in a fragmented world; relationships between spaces, territories and populations.

Etienne Pierart examines the state of the world today, shedding light on the signs of a shift between resistance, hope and destruction. He explores the finer details of landscapes and everyday views.  This is how he highlights the poetics of paradox.  This sensitive blend paves the way to other dimensions of reality.   He focuses on layers of reality harbouring mystery by cleverly exploiting any glimmer of an interstice. 

His works stem from man's observations of the environment.  He has a unique modus operandi.  Colour photographs are produced digitally and black and white photographs on film or noble photographic prints.  Some shots are captured from an aerial perspective. ' I like to get up high in relation to myself and in relation to our world in general.  From above, photography has the ability to sublimate and provides us with another style, another palette.  I feel good up there.'  

Trees and arborescence, the Arctic and Antarctic Poles, the narratives presented in the photographs are appealing...Perception moves from detailed to wide-angle shots.  His stance does not prevent us from seeing the rest of the setting.  Each context remains open to expansion and interpretation.  The gaze, as free a a bird, oscillates from one level of reality to another, with intuitive inconsistency.  'Of course climate change issues and models upset me, but my role is not to arbitrate this disaster.  What I have photographed will disappear (...).  My work provides a lyrical testimony.' 

The way these photos are captured accentuates an indexing style that occasionally causes illusion.  However no alteration or distension is apparent.  The expression of nature is unspoilt and sensitive.  The moment is captured without manipulation, to preserve poetic immersion at the heart of ecosystems and embrace the inflated anticipation of a certain atmosphere.  'I don't like " photoshoping".  The environment is so beautiful.  The light is magical at certain times of the day.  I don't feel the need to 'cheat' in relation to that.'

Etienne Pierart's work is a succession of ambiences with an ability to present a beautiful and genuine vision of the world.  It expresses a desire to set off, to travel across territories marked by an imagination fuelled by road trips to experience the lay of the land, populations, fauna and flora as closely as possible.  Constantly travelling, the photographer grasps the immediacy of unique encounters and places that are open to interpretation.  His voyages are both simple and enigmatic, arousing our curiosity for otherworldliness.  They beckon us to contemplate a grandiose and invincible sight stirring emotion deep within us.

Etienne Pierart - Un spectacle grandiose et indomptable.

La planète est son studio.  Ses photographies véhiculent la beauté et la complexité des contradictions d'un monde fragmenté ; des rapports entre les espaces, les territoires et les peuples.

Etienne Pierart porte un regard sur un état du monde actuel, éclairant les marques d'un changement entre résistance, espoir et destruction.  Il explore l'intime d'un paysage ou d'une vue quotidienne. Une manière de pointer la poésie du paradoxe. Ce mix sensitif ouvre les portes vers d'autres dimensions de la réalité.  Il s'attarde sur les plis du réel dans lesquels résident le mystère en exploitant à merveille le moindre interstice.

Ses travaux sont issus d'observations entretenues par l'homme sur l'environnement.  Ils empruntent un mode opératoire qui lui est propre.  Les photographies couleurs sont réalisées en procédé numérique et celles en noir et blanc en modulation argentique et en procédés pigmentaires anciens (gommes bichromatées, ou tirage au charbon). Certains clichés sont accomplis en prise de vue aérienne. "J'aime prendre de la hauteur par rapport à moi-même et par rapport à notre monde en général.  Vue du ciel, la photographie se sublime et nous offre un autre graphisme, une autre colorimétrie. Je me sens bien tout là-haut."

L'arbre et l'arborescence, les pôles arctique et antarctique....Les photographies attirent par la narration qui s'y déploie.  Le ressenti passe du détail au plan large.  Son point de vue ne nous empêche pas de voir le reste du décor.  Chaque situation reste ouverte au prolongement et à l'interprétation. Le regard, libre de circuler ici et là, oscille d'un niveau de réalité à un autre, dans un écart intutif. "Certes les enjeux et les équations climatiques me boulversent, mais ce n'est pas mon rôle d'arbitrer ce désastre.  Ce que j'ai photographié disparaîtra (...) Mon travail est un témoignage lyrique. "

La méthode de captation souligne un mode indiciaire avec une intention parfois prêtée aux illusions de l'image.  Pourtant aucune transformation ni distension n'est pratiquée. Le langage de la nature est préservé avec sa parole sensible.  C'est une capture de l'instant sans manipulation, pour ne pas altérer l'immersion poétique au coeur des écosystèmes et permettre d'embrasser l'attente distendue d'un climat.  " Je n'aime pas "photoshoper" l'environnement est tellement beau, les lumières sont magiques à certaines heures, je n'éprouve pas le besoin de tricher par rapport à ça."

Le travail d'Etienne Pierart est une succession d'atmosphères aptes à rendre un point de vue esthétique et réel sur le monde.   C'est une envie de partir, parcourir des territoires marqués par un imaginaire nourri du road trip pour connaître la configuration du terrain, de ses populations, de sa faune et sa flore au plus près. Dans ses déplacemens constants, le photographe saisit l'immédiateté de rencontres et de lieux et à chaque fois singuliers qui prêtent à l'interprétation.  Ses traversées sont à la fois simples et énigmatiques et nous sollicitent vers la curiosité d'un ailleurs.  Elles nous transportent dans la contemplation d'un spectacle grandiose et indomptable qui fait naître en nous une émotion profonde.

We are often led to wonder about the meaning of our journey, its different stages, the discovery of other and new horizons that triggered each click of the camera, tranforming the ephemerality of a vision into a permanent relic, capturing a split second in space and time in an attempt to appropriate eternity.

In less than a second this trigger fixes what will be the primary vision for this shot, this moment of capturing space in a real time and place of the vast, elusive world.

Before a beautiful image is processed and developed, how many paths are traveled across the vast world from north to south, east to west, and through vale and mountain!

We often talk of the immediacy of photographic creation , of the photographer exploding a theme in a fraction of second. But isn't the trigger the culmination of a very long journey or itinerary ? The photographer is always on the look-out but often manages to seize his moment only at the end of a long route.

To photograph the world is to make contact again with the human element, light and matter.  It is to try to transmit a unity in movement and its dramatic art:  they are the mirror of both my character and my life.

In a world in which the art of photography appears so often to have moved beyond reality, because it is considered now too banally objective, the shots captured in time by photographer Etienne Pierart demonstrate to us just how the most authentic seed of introspective emotion is inherent in the objectivity of reality, to undestand the deeper meanings of human existence and solidarity. A great traveler who, while not using sophisticated means of manipulating the images in post-production to provide us with very real images, follows an entirely inner path, which represents a sort of inititation into life in its most candid authenticity.  Photographs of the soul, between beauty and nature, a voyage of a human life in itself.  The voyage is the true protagonist, the emotion of traveling, that must be understood as a journey through the space of the imaginary in time and of the siprit :  a pilgrimage of homeric and dantesque memories.  Dreamlike impressions, yet not fabulously unreal, characterize is works, which constitute a sort of illumination-fusion between the photographer (and through it, the observer) and the surrounding world.  Man and nature become two equivalent poles or entities, which balance each other and unite in a cosmic fusion, in which man undoes himself.

Dans un monde où l'art de la photographie, considéré aujourd'hui d'une banale objectivité, apparaît si souvent avoir dépassé la réalité, les prises de vue, capturées dans le temps, du photographe Etienne Pierart, nous montrent à quel point la graine de l'émotion introspective la plus authentique est inhérente à l'objectivité de la réalité, pour comprendre les significations profondes de l'existence humaine et de la solidarité.  Un grand voyageur qui, s'abstenant de recourir aux moyens sophistiqués de la retouche d'image en post-production afin de nous donner à voir des images très réalistes, suit un chemin exclusivement intérieur, qui représente une sorte d'initiation à la vie dans son authenticité la plus sincère.  Des photographies de l'âme, entre beauté et nature, un voyage de la vie humaine en soi.  Le voyage est le véritable protagoniste, l'émotion de l'odysée, qui doit se comprendre comme un périple à travers l'esprit et l'espace de l'imaginaire dans le temps : un pèlerinage de souvenirs homériques et dantesques.  Sans être fabuleusement irréelles, des impressions oniriques caractérisent ses oeuvres, qui constituent une sorte d'illumination-fusion entre le photographe (et, à travers lui, l'observateur) et le monde qui l'entoure.  L'homme et la nature se métamorphosent en deux pôles ou entités équivalents, qui s'équilibrent réciproquement et s'unissent dans une fusion cosmique.
